Tunes Tuesday

Mic check 1, 2, 1, 2… It’s your boy DJ M-80 on the 1’s and 2’s bringing you that flavor in your ear for Tunes Tuesday. If you are unfamiliar with the format, every Tuesday we pick a theme and I highlight three songs that you can add to your running or workout playlist. This week’s theme is Ghetto Tech also known as Detroit club music, booty music, or the “mixes.”

Let me school y’all real quick, Detroit is the birth place of techno music. Back in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s Detroit –based artists and DJ’s produced music for warehouse parties also known as raves.  The drug of choice during raves was Ecstasy known today as Molly. Anyways, this type of music features “four-on-the-floor” rhythms ( Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom). Techno got big in the Ghetto of Detroit and individuals started to produce the own version of techno and called it Ghetto Tech. Ghetto Tech is usually played faster than most other dance music genres, at roughly 145 to 170 bpm. This is because DJs played records at 45 RPM instead of 33.3 RPM. To simply put it Ghetto Tech is raw and unfiltered. It also has its own style of dancing called Jitting and it mainly centers around the fast movement of feet or “foot work.” During the early 2000’s, Ghetto Tech scene fizzed out in Detroit. However, it started to get big overseas.

Today I share with you 3 songs that are near and dear to my heart. Not only does it represent my city. They are the reasons why I wanted to start DJing in the first place…Even though these songs are about 15-20 years old; they are still a big deal in Detroit and a staple within the Ghetto Tech scene.

Let’s get to the music…

Godzilla! Godzilla!

Artist: DJ Slugo
Title: Godzilla remix
Side note: This song bring back  many memories of my DJing days. Whenever this played this song, the dance floor would instantly go crazy!  Booty shaking at it’s best! If you’re not dancing or at least tapping your toes by the middle of the song. Check your pulse because you might be dead…

Work it! Work it!

Artist: Jammin Gerald
Title: Uh Oh, Work it! Work it!
Side note: When this song came out I was 8 years old…. I  remember this listening to this and telling my brother that I wanted to a DJ on the radio. This was back in the day when people use to record songs off of the radio because you afford to buy the actually cassette of the artist.

Bang! Bang!

Artist: DJ Godfather
Title: Bang Bang
Side note: When I was 10 or 11  got my first DJ set… It was crappy equipment but I love the mess out of it… It was one of those Gemini DJ in the box set. It came with 2 belt drive turntables and a two channel mixer. When I went to the record shop to get some music, this was the first record I bought.

There you have it. three Ghetto Tech songs to help you move your feet.
