The Paleo Update: 21 Days Down.

Paleo Caveman

The third week of being Paleo started off better than the second week. Since there was no cheating this week; let’s start off with…

Sugar Withdrawals

Since the day I started Paleo, sugar withdrawals have been the bane of my existence but guess what? Week 3 wasn’t all that bad…I had less head aches and even lesser cravings… I still crave cookies and cake but not as much. I consider that a win in my book.

Running Performance

My running performance has been smooth sailing until yesterday. When I was scheduled to run 14 miles but I ended up stopping at 11 because I simply ran out of energy. If I had some race fuel like some chomps or something I’m pretty sure I would have finished my run.  I need to find a Paleo alternative to race fuels ASAP,  if you have any suggestions please let me know.

Meal Planning

My girlfriend decided to take another stab at meal planning, mainly because she is better than me in this department. She knows how to keep it simple, where I’m the one always researching new recipes online. Here’s what we had:

Breakfast All Week– Bacon and Eggs (hard-boiled, scrambled, fried)

Lunch All Week– Chopped Salad. We put all the meats and veggies in separate bags, so we can make the salad however we want it.

Dinner Sun-Mon: Turkey Meat Balls, Sweet Potatoes, and Cauliflower

Dinner Tue-Wed: Baked Chicken and Cabbage

Dinner Thur- Friday: Broiled Tilapia and Cabbage

Dinner Sat-Sun: BBQ Ribs, Chicken, and Collard Greens

My Weight

Scale
A friend once told me they can tell I’m losing weight because my feet looks skinnier.

Lastly my weight is what people is the most curious about. When I started this Paleo Challenge I weighed 286lbs; after 14 days I weighed 281lbs; and after 21 days my weight is 277.6lbs. That’s another 3.4lbs lost.  I think this is crazy because I’m not starving myself, if anything I feel like I’m eating more since I’ve been Paleo and I’m still running 3-4 times a week. Whatever it is I’m dropping weight like crazy.

That’s all I have for this week… Here’s to 21 days done and 69 days to go.

Paleo Update: 14 Days Down

Paleo Caveman

Well this is the second of week of being Paleo and it started off a little rough. Let’s start with…

Somebody’s Cheating!?!

I caught my girlfriend cheating on the diet. Last Sunday I left the house to grab a few things. When I came home I went to throw away some receipts. I open the garbage can to find this brown paper bag taking up half of the garbage can. I opened the bag to find a burger king bag inside of it. I looked at the receipt and seen that she had order a chicken sandwich, fries, a drink and Cinna Minis.  We had a discussion about it, both of us felt some sort a way about the situation, but we came to mutual understanding.

Sugar Withdrawals

This week my sugar withdrawals have been nothing nice! I’m taking about headaches, cravings, energy swings the full monty. Some of the things that I did to combat was to eat super ripe fruit, like pineapples, mangos, grapes, and watermelon, but some days cutting it. I’ll  be full but I didn’t feel satisfied, and that’s when the cravings kicked in. On Monday and Tuesday, I was craving white bread and not just any white bread; I’m talking about the Wonder Bread white bread that sticks to the roof of your mouth and peanut butter on top of it. Wednesday and Thursday my craving was cookies; Chocolate Chip, Thin Mint, Samoa, all of my favorite cookies was coming to haunt me. Then it got me to wondering why god didn’t make lettuce as good as cookies or cake?? You never hear of anyone craving lettuce like the crave sweets. That’s just a food for thought. Eventually my craving tapered down on Friday and I was OK during the weekend. Let’s hope I’m done with the sugar withdrawals.

Meal Planning

It was my girlfriend to do meal planning this week, since she is a busy woman she don’t have time look for Paleo recipes. So she just Paleofied the things that we already eat. Everything was real simple to make and shows that you don’t always need recipes to make Paleo friendly food.

Breakfast All Week– Bacon and Eggs (hard boiled, scrambled, fried)

Boiled Eggs

Lunch Monday-Wednesday – Chipotle Chicken Salad

Chicken Salad

Lunch Thursday –Saturday – Thai Tuna Lettuce Wraps

Dinner Monday-Wednesday – Ground Chicken Stir Fry w/ cucumber relish

Chicken Stir Fry

Dinner Thursday –Friday – Broiled Tilapia w/ broccoli and carrots

Running Performance

As far as my running performance is concerned, I really haven’t seen a decrease. I’ve been running a little slower, but I attribute that to the heat plus I experimenting with minimalist running. Yesterday I ran 11 miles with no problem. I received a few samples of energy bits; they seem to work pretty well. I’m still experimenting with things. Eventually I would like to find a Paleo friendly running fuel and a post run supplement, because my runs are only getting longer and harder as I train for the Detroit Marathon.

My Weight

Lastly my weight is what people is the most curious about. When I started Paleo I weighed 286lbs. After the first seven days I only lost a half of pound.

Scale

After 14 days of being Paleo I weigh 281 lbs that’s a loss of 5 lbs lost!! Now my question is was the sugar withdrawals worth the loss in 5 lbs in two weeks? That’s all I have this week here’s to 14 days down and 76 days to go…

P.s. Don’t forget to enter into the Jaybird Freedom Sprint Earbud Giveaway and Blue Diamond Almond Giveaway both are ending soon.

I can literally taste the food. My addiction to sugar and carbs are kicking my butt. I feel like Pookie from New Jack City… The cookies just keeps calling me. The cool thing is that I have a great support group online. Shout out to my Paleo God Mothers Margo from Brooklyn Fit Chick and Kelly from Curvy Fit Girl. These women have gave me advice, listen to me complain, and even talked me off the ledge a few times when my cravings get out of hand. Thank You Ladies!!

For those who are thinking about going Paleo, the thing that really helped me the most was meal planning.  I’m talking about breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, midnight snacks etc. Know what I’m going to eat, even in a bind help me greatly.  All of my recipes last week came from PaleOMG, I really like her site because it’s has a meal planer and shopping list on the site. What I did was plan my meals then downloaded the Ziplist app to my phone and went shopping from the list that it created. It definitely saved me some time.

Well that’s all I got for this week… Here’s to seven days down and 83 more to go.

I’m Going Paleo !?!

Going Paleo

I know there are mixed reviews on the Paleo diet, some people love it, some people hate, but I need to find out if it is right for me. I feel like the only way to know if something is right for you is to try it out yourself. So that’s what I’m going to do! Yup I’m going Paleo… For the next 90days!

I know some of you are rejoicing, while others are giving me the face palm, but hey a guy got to do what a guy got to do.

In all seriousness I’ve decide to go Paleo simply because I’m intrigued by the diet and the effects that it suppose to have. Plus the thought of living like a caveman… no grains, no diary, no legumes along with some other stuff sounds kind of… Cool? Crazy? Maybe both?

Curiosity of Paleo…

Paleo Caveman

I’m curious to see why so many people who made to the switch to Paleo claims “The best thing they ever did for their weight loss journey was to go Paleo.” I’m also curious to see why so many people dislike Paleo and never tried it before.

I’m curious to see how going Paleo will affect my running performance. I already run slowly, so is it going to make me run slower?

I’m curious how going Paleo will affect my waistline. I lost 50 pounds with no diet then I kind of hit a plateau; will going Paleo help me get pass this plateau?

Will going Paleo affect my mood? Am I so addicted to carbs and sugar that my body will go into withdrawal?

All of these questions and more I want answers to.

So here’s to going Paleo! Here’s to locking all of my grains and sugars in the basement for next ninety days. Here’s to pouring out all of my milk, throwing out all of my cheese and donating all of my legumes to the nearest food pantry.

For the next ninety day I will be Paleo. Every week I will do a Paleo update to tell you all what I ate, how I feel, my weight changes and anything else that I see noteworthy. After ninety days I will decide if I will go back to my regular diet or stay Paleo.

If you’re curious about the whole Paleo thing stay tuned because I’m going to give you the good, bad, and the ugly of my Paleo experience.

What are you thoughts on Paleo? Love it? Hate it? What questions do you have about the Paleo Diet? Are you interested in trying the diet? Have you tried the diet and didn’t like it let me know?

Lets Have A Dietbet

Diet-Bet

Oh no I’ve hit a plateau! I’ve been around 305-295 lbs. for about two months and this weight has to go! By no means am I downing the fact that I’ve lost a significant amount weight already but it’s not where I want to be. The summer will be here before you know it and I’m trying to wear a speedo to the beach… No I’m not serious or am I? While I decide if I’m serious about the speedo comment; I do know that I am trying to walk around with no shirt on and this plateau is not helping a bit. Lately I’ve been looking for creative ways to break through this plateau and I found out that FitFluential is hosting a Dietbet. What’s a Dietbet you say?  A Dietbet is a game where you’ve got 4 weeks to lose 4% of your starting weight. Everyone puts money into the pot. I think it’s about time to put my money where my weight loss is and join the Dietbet. The way I see it’s a win-win situation, I lost weight and get cash. The bet is only 20 bucks and if you hit the target weight loss of 4% of your starting weight you get to split the pot with me. I say with me because I know that going to win. You gotta love my competitive spirit. The FitFluential Dietbet starts on March 11, 2013. Who’s with me? Let’s lose weight and win money together!

5 Tips to Increase Vegetable Intake

One of the major changes I made during this weight loss journey was to increase my vegetable intake. Being a man I thought that only consist of eating salads (rabbit food) every day. After a while I just got sick and tired of eating rabbit food. The problem then became how do I get enough vegetables without eating rabbit food? After a few months a trial and error here are a few tips that I’ve found success to increase vegetables in my diet.

5 Tips to Increase Vegetable Intake

Eat Soup: There’s nothing better than a warm soup on a cold winter day. They are very easy to cook; it consist of only a few steps; chop up veggies, add liquid based (low sodium, low fat of course) , set it in the slow cooker and forget it. Looking for some soup recipes? Martinus got you covered here are some soup recipes from my fellow FitFluential Ambassadors. Check them out and tell them Martinus sent you.

Make an omelet: This is by far one of my favorite ways to add vegetables to my diet. Chop up your favorite veggies and put it in your omelet.  Don’t have time to make an omelet? Scramble the eggs with the veggies and you’re golden!

Single serve you veggies: After going grocery shopping take 10 -20 minutes to wash, chop and bag your veggies into single servings. This will give you a head start for the week. This will make your vegetables easily accessible when you are looking in the fridge for a snack and the only thing you see is your veggies individually wrapped waiting on you.

Get Creative: Carrots and celery can get so boring at times. Get creative and try other types of vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers, zucchini and etc.; for added bonus use hummus for a low calorie, full flavor vegetable dip.

Drink them: Dust that blender off and experiment with different combinations of fruit/veggie smoothies. Your smoothie is too thick? Try using a cheese cloth to strain the smoothie. Here are couple smoothie recipes to get you started.

By incorporating some of these tips into your daily routine your vegetable intake will increase significantly and you might even find new vegetables that you like. Now it’s your turn to “weigh in”! What are some things that you do to increase you vegetable intake? What is your favorite tip from today’s post? What are the best tasting vegetable soup/ smoothie that have ever had/made? What makes it so good? Also here are some other recipes that so you should check out.
