5 Ways to Celebrate National Running Day

I Run For Donuts

It’s finally here, National Running Day! This runner’s holiday is held annually on the first Wednesday in June. It’s a day when runners everywhere declare their passion for running. It is a coast-to-coast celebration of a sport and activity that’s simple, inexpensive and fun. It’s the perfect way for longtime runners to reaffirm their love of running and for beginners to kick off a lifetime of life-changing commitment. Below are five ways to celebrate National Running Day.

  1. Go for a run… Duh! This one is self-explanatory. Whether it’s one or 26.2 miles, going for a run is a great way to celebrate national running day. Lace your shoes up, get out there, and run.
  2. Sign up for a race … Do you have to take a rain check on running today? Show your commitment  to running by signing up for a race. A 5k race is great way to dust the cobwebs off your running shoes and a great way to start your fitness journey of your own.
  3. Treat yourself to some new running gear… Check your inventory… Is it time for shoes, shorts, socks or fuel? Well go to Amazon and restock them your inventory today! I need some socks and new shoes so I’m going to do some restocking today.
  4. Run naked…Noooo I’m not talking about in the literal sense but hey if that’s your thing do it. I’m talking about ditching the cell phone, sports watches, and head phones and soak up the environment around you. Listen to the rhythm of your breathing, your heart beat and your feet hitting the ground. For god sakes be one with yourself.
  5. Plan a group run… Haven’t heard from a friend in a while? How about planning a run with them to catch up on everything that you missed in each other’s life… If you friend is not near, try calling them when you are on a run.

Whether you are a veteran, newbie, or your thinking about getting off the couch to start running, just remember it’s all about having fun and getting active. Therefore, whatever type of run you have on today remember it’s better than not running at all.

How will you celebrate National Running Day?

Until next time,

300 Pounds and Running in the Dark!?!?! Electric Run Here I Come

What’s up goal crushers! Marathon training is starting to wear on me because it’s starting to feel like a job.  On week days I’m up at 5 am to go running which leaves me just enough time to stretch, take a shower and get to work on time. This makes running all business!!! Yes I know that I’m on a strict training schedule but I need to liven it up a little bit, because all run and no play is making me sad today. What is a guy to do?  How about I run in the dark?  Confused? Well you shouldn’t be, because I just signed up for the Electric Run!!!

For those who don’t know what the Electric Run is check out the video below:

I’m excited to run and party … Mostly excited about the party part though. This is my first time running a themed race.  I really excited that I’m running in a party environment and not really worry about my pace or staying on track with marathon training. Heck I might even leave my phone at home and not track this race on run keeper… OK I might be going too far this one. Anyways if you are in the Hartford area and would like to join me at the Electric Run on August 10, 2013, use the coupon code 300 and you will receive 10% off the race entry. I hope to see you all there!! Get prepare for an awesome race recap!

What I learned Running My 1st Half Marathon

Learned running half marathon

So when I ran my first half marathon, I felt horrible, sick and nauseous. I felt like I never wanted to run a race again. Now that I’m fully recovered and been to FitBloggin (fitbloggin recap coming soon), I feel amazing and energized about running my first half marathon race. It was a definitely learn experience. So I am here today to tell you a few things that I learned from running the Stratton Faxon Half Marathon.

check the weatherCheck the weather

Three or four days before the race it was very mild, I’m talking low to mid 70’s, low humidity, with an overcast. I figured the race was going to mild be also. Yea, I was totally wrong about that! The temperature during the race was about 86 degrees (F) and 90-100% humidity. If I would have check the weather a couple of days before the race I would have been mentally prepared for the weather.

In trainingTrust my training

When I came back from Jamaica, I had not run in about two weeks and I had about two weeks until the race. Up to that point I have not missed a day in my training program so when I got back I started second guessing whether I would finish the race.  As you can see I did finish the race. I found out that I don’t have to follow the plan to the “T” to finish a race. However I did finish about 95% of the plan.

Don't drink all the waterDon’t drink all the water

During the first couple miles I hit every water stop. Mainly because it was so humid during the race, it ended up being so uncomfortable to run because I was full of water.  For marathon training I will research a hydration plan/fuel plan and stick to it. If you have any suggestions please let me know.

high fiveSoak it in

The one thing I enjoyed the most running the race was socializing with spectators and other runners. It really got me through the race. My suggestion is start with a smile at and high-five as many people as you can. It really does help getting you to the end.

run your raceRun your race

This may sound confusing but it’s straight to the point. Sometimes you will see other runners and you will feel like you can keep up with them but sometimes that is not the case. I seen a lot of people burn out during the race because they were trying to keep up with someone who they thought they could run with. Please! Please! Please! Run your race!  Sometimes you might by yourself for a bit, but near the end of the race you will be bound to pass people who burned out because they started so fast at the beginning of the race. Trust me it feels good to pass people near the end of the race.

At first I wasn’t sold on the running the half marathon experience; however I’m glad that I did it. I hope that you take what I learned from this half marathon and put it to your race experience.

8 Days Til Half Marathon

What up goal crushers! 8 days!  8 days left until my first half marathon! Wow, I really need to stop and let that soak in for a minute. It’s astonishing to see how far I’ve come, from not running at all to my running first 5K then 10 now preparing to run first half marathon. I must that I’m very proud of myself for sticking with the training because lord knows there have been times where I wanted to quit and go eat a whole cake and a gallon of butter pecan ice cream. Now all I need to do is make it to the starting line injury free. I have 8 days to my first half marathon and the butterflies are starting to emerge from their cocoons and stir around in my stomach. At times I can’t tell if its nervousness or the runners runs going on inside of me. I’ve been mentally preparing for the race however controlling my own thoughts of disbelief is a daunting task.  Questions like: did I train hard enough; will I be able to complete the race; why didn’t you run in Jamaica; run through my mind as if they are training to hold me down during the race. I even caught myself unconsciously saying, “I’m capable of running and finishing this race,” as if positive thoughts are in combat with the negative ones. All of this is happen while my body just wants to get the thing over with… Yea I have a lot going on right now. So with a week and a day left until the half marathon, I have a 10 miler set for this Sunday. Tapering will begin on Monday, where I will not run any distance over 4 mile in order to save my legs for the big day.

Question of the day: Do you have pre-race nervousness? If so, how do you combat it?

p.s. We are conducting a survey of people who are either 1) bloggers who blog about their weight loss journey, or 2) people who read blogs written by people on a weight loss journey.  We want to understand what bloggers get out of the experience and we want to understand what readers get out of reading blogs. So if you have a few minutes please complete the survey.

My 1st Run Since Vacation (The Declaration)

Don't Ever Quit

Now that I’m back from vacation I leave no hesitation to getting back into the swing of things. I haven’t gone for a run in over a week and my first half marathon is in 2 weeks. Needless to say I need to put my feet to the pavement. During my warm-up, I contemplated what distance I should run.  Feeling the tightness in calves I agreed that running a 5k should be a fine distance to break the ice. As I worked up the mental courage to get started, I thought about how far I’ve came and how much further I have to go and started my run. While I listened to the rhythm of my breath and feet hitting the pavement, I tried to give myself a reason to stop what I’m doing, quit and go home. The only thing that came to mind was all the people I would be letting down if I did quit including myself. It made me wonder, how could I come so far and still have thoughts of giving it up?  Where is this undercover self-doubt coming from? I have no intentions of giving up and letting go of what I worked SO HARD to get. So why am I having thoughts of quitting run through my mind? I do know one thing, I’m not going to listen to these thoughts, and I’m not letting anything get in the way of my goals. While this suppose to be a post about my first run since my vacation it has become a declaration to world that I’m not giving up on my goals. I’m going to see it through to the end. BTW I did complete my run and it felt great to be done.

What do you think about this? Do you have thoughts of quitting? How you you combat them?
