Manchester Road Race Recap

Manchester Road Race

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. For me, Thanksgiving was great, I ran the Manchester Road Race for the first time and it was amazing. It’s the 4th largest race in the United States and the largest race in New England. 15,000 people registered for the race and another 5,000 people ran the race bandit. I saw some great costumes, from a person wearing a Christmas tree to the teletubbies, to a family of turkeys.

Manchester Road Race

To me the race was tough, there were a few hills on the course that made me want to stop running. However I didn’t because there were so many people along the course cheering you on. I also believe that there were bands playing music at least every half mile. The last half of the race was amazing; you start at the bottom of the hill and you can see the finish line at the top. The cheering gets louder the closer you get to the finish line. Cameras flashing from all directions, it made me feel like a big time runner. I was so moved by the experience that I sprinted the last quarter-mile of the race. I finished the race in 1:05:36. Afterwards I felt happy, tired, hungry, excited, and grateful that I am healthy enough to run this race. I’m also thankful to have a support system that encourages me through this journey; many people say that I’m an inspiration to them but they are an inspiration to me at the same time. We are really building a community here at 300 Pounds and Running and I want to thank everyone who is a part of it.

After the race I went to my car and towel off with a Shower Pill Athletic Wipe. They are an alternative when there is no shower around or when you don’t have time for one. Think of it as a stronger, thicker, bigger version of baby wipes. The main difference is that Shower Pill Athletic Wipes leaves me feeling clean where as baby wipes just leaves me feeling wet and icky.

Shower Pill

I would recommend Shower Pill to anyone who is on the go but wants to be active while staying fresh afterwards. This would be a great gift for that person in the office who works out during their lunch break. If you want to try it out or get it as a gift for someone Shower Pill is having a Black Friday Sale on Amazon from 11/23-11/25. Buy two (2) boxes and get one (1) free. You must place 3 boxes in the shopping cart and enter the code SPFRIDAY to receive to 3rd box free.

The Manchester Road Race was the last race I had planned for this year. I’m going to tapered down my running to 3 days a weeks and got to CrossFit at least 4 days a week. I think this will be good for the winter months plus I’m excited to add resistance training back into my regimen. I also I have a huge surprise for everyone but you have to stay tune to see what it is.

300 Pounds and Running at Columbia CrossFit

In search of finding my joy and getting out of this funk; I decided to try a new sport…yup CrossFit! I started my on-ramp classes at Columbia CrossFit; DJ was my trainer and he was very knowledgeable. Today we went over the basic principles of CrossFit and 3 of the 9 Fundamental movements of CrossFit; squat, front squat and overhead squat.

Columbia CrossFit

I pretty much had the form down pack because I played football and I was a strength and conditioning coach for a high school football team at one point in my life. This was cool because DJ went over some of the advance movements in addition to what he wanted me to learn. Then DJ poses the question…Since your background is already Exercise Physiology why don’t you get your level 1 certificate? I thought to myself that might be a good idea in the future. After all the introduction to all the movements DJ had me run through a MOD-WOD it consists of 5 rounds of 5 push-ups  10 sit ups and 15 squats for time. I finish it in 5 minutes and 57 seconds. Trust me it’s harder than then it sounds.

Columbia CrossFit

I’m so excited about adding CrossFit to my journey and I think it will mesh well with my marathon training. It always helps that I like the personality of the gym. Day 2 of my ramp will be posted in a couple of days…Wish me luck!

Question of the day: What are your thoughts of CrossFit? If you never tried CrossFit before, what are your preconceived notions about it? Because my girlfriend keeps asking if I flipped a tire yet.

My First 5K Race

Yesterday I participated in the Stephen Siller’s Tunnel to Towers Charity 5K. I’m excited that my first race was for charitable cause.

I decided to take the momentum from my previous work out and run outside today. The birds were chirping and the bees were buzzing. Wait…. I think I’m dreaming! Finding it weird that I dreamt about running; I get out of the bed, put on my clothes and went for a run.
