(Singing in Pharrell’s voice) I’m Happyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy, Because I’m Happyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! Why I’m happy you say? Over the weekend, Nike unveiled the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 31. I must say that I’m pretty excited because this shoe just works for me. This is one of the few shoes that I can walk into the store ask for a size 14 and not try them on. This rarely happens as a big guy! Additionally, I ran my first marathon in a pair of Nike Air Zoom Pegasus, so this shoe will always have a special pace in my heart.

The shoe is completely redesigned… According to Nike the iconic shoes was inspired by gold medalist, world champion Mo Farah  and they wear tested this shoe over 16,000 miles.

“When designing the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 31, we had the unique benefit of athlete feedback from 16,000-plus miles of wear testing in the shoe and this helped us focus on fine-tuning and evolving this iconic shoe to make it feel even faster and more responsive,” said Mark Miner, Senior Footwear Designer. “Mo Farah is truly an advocate for the performance of the shoe, and he gave us insights along the way that allowed us to revolutionize the 31”

The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 31 is supposed to have a faster and more responsive feel. Additionally, the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 31 now has a 10 mm drop, which supposed to give the shoe more natural ride.

I cannot wait to get my hands on these bad boys and take them for a run… Be on the lookout for a review on the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 31 in the near future.

New Nike Zoom Air Running Collection Released Over The Weekend

On Friday, Nike released its Zoom Air Running Collection.  For those who do not know, the Zoom collections are the ones with the air units inside of the mid soles.  It consists of four shoes:

Nike Zoom Air Pegasus 31

Nike Zoom Air Pegasus

The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus is a neutral running shoe. It’s one the most iconic shoe out there. The latest Pegasus retains the heel Zoom Air and breathable upper. It introduces enhancements like a 10 mm drop for a more natural stance and an engineered midfoot saddle for targeted structure and support. Out of all the shoes coming out this summer, I’m excited the most about theses.

Nike Zoom Air Structure 18

Nike Zoom Air Structure

The Nike Air Zoom Structure is a stability running shoe.  The latest Structure includes Dynamic Fit technology, which includes a lateral crash rail and a Dynamic Support stability system made up of foam with three different levels of density.  Combine this with Zoom Air cushioning to give the snappy, quick-off-the ground feel. I personal never tried the Zoom Air Structures but I look forward to trying them out.

Nike Zoom Air Elite 7

Nike Zoom Air Elite

The Nike Zoom Air Elite is the lightest of the Zoom Air family. It features a neutral platform, a 8mm drop and Nike Flywire technology.

Nike Zoom Air Streak 5

According to Nike, “More athletes win marathons in the Zoom Streak than any other Nike shoe.”

The Nike Air Zoom Streak 5 and Air Zoom Pegasus 31 are available now. The Air Zoom Elite 7 will be available in August and the Air Zoom Structure 18, in October.

Saucony Virrata Review

When I first received these shoes I was very skeptical. I must admit it’s because I’m a Nike fan boy, every pair of shoes I have own has been Nike. So when I initially tried on the Saucony Virrata I really wasn’t that enthusiastic. At first they felt funny on my feet but I decide to give the a fair shot, so after running in them for 50 more or miles here are my thoughts.

Saucony Virrata review

The Saucony Virrata has a “zero drop”, which makes this technically a minimalist shoe. I find this odd because when I think of a minimalist shoe I think no cushion however the Saucony Virrata has lots of cushion. The best way to describe what the Saucony Virrata is like is to imagine that a neutral running shoe and a minimalist shoe had a baby; viola! You have the Saucony Virrata. Now back to the review… Initially it took me a while to get use to these shoes. I pretty much had to change my stride and start landing towards my forefoot in order for them to feel comfortable. But once I got that done it was smooth sailing. The Saucony Virrata is very lightweight and they feel durable. The ride felt decent up to the 5 mile mark. Anything after 5 miles in these shoes my heels would start to hurt something that has never happen in my Nikes. I would consider this shoe for runs up to 5 miles which is a distance that I run the most.

I would recommend these shoes to anyone would like to try a minimalist running shoe before really going all the way minimalist. Also to anyone who’s working their way up to a 10k but any distance after that you might want to look for an another shoe as it gave my problems for the longer distances, but that’s just my two pennies. If you have any experience with Saucony Virrata, be sure to leave your thoughts below.

Nike Air Pegasus 29 Shield: Initial Thoughts

Nike Air Pegasus 29 Shield 4

Shoes are the most important equipment that you need when running… Hell when doing anything for that matter cause an ill-fitting shoe can and will ruin your day; it definitely ruins your run. Another thing that can ruin your run is cold wet shoes…I would say having cold wet shoes is up there with ill-fitting shoes. I know firsthand because the other day I went for a run in my Nike Flyknits, it wasn’t snow on the ground but it was wet and I messed around and stepped in a puddle. If you don’t know what Nike Flyknits are; they are the super light shoes that are woven together their claim to fame was being the 2012 Olympic podium shoe. Anyway they are woven together leaving me feet cold and wet. This experience leads me to think I need some type of winter running shoe. Then I pose the question: Do they even make a winter running shoe or am I just making this up? So I asked the nice folks @NikeRunning what do they have to solve my problem…They gave me a couple of options.

Now it’s time to go to the store and check them out. This will be a journey in its self because I wear a size 14 and they are scarce mainly because most companies send the stores one size 14 at a time and I’m not the special order type of guy; when I say I’m going shoe shopping I’m coming home with shoes! I ended up going to 4 stores and I must say that I’m never shopping at Footlocker, Champs or Foot Action ever again. I went in these stores, wondered around with shoes in my hand, ready to spend some my hard earn cash and nobody greeted me. I worked on commission before I would have been an easy sale all they had to do is say hello but they didn’t… Anyways I am done ranting. I end up at Dick’s Sporting Goods. They only had one shoe in the Hypershield collection in my size. They were the Nike Air Pegasus 29 Shield.

Trying them on my initial thought was they felt like my Nike Vomero 7’s. This is a good thing because they are currently my favorite running shoes. Compared side by side the sole and the cushion looks and feel the same.

Nike Air Pegasus 29 Shield versus Vomero 7

The only difference is that the Nike Air Pegasus 29 Shield has more of an aggressive sole than my Nike Vomero 7’s, the better to run in light snow or ice (I hope). The Nike Air Pegasus 29 Shield is also water-resistant, hopefully answering my prayers of not have cold wet feet while running. I’m very curious to see if these shoes will solve my problem, but only time will tell. I must say though Nike usually doesn’t let me down when it comes to running shoes so I know the comfort part is guaranteed. However I’m looking for mainly function in this shoe… I will see when I run in them when it’s wet outside and follow-up in a couple of weeks to give my complete review on these puppies.
